Giants move Maday to Single-A San Jose

Minor league baseball players learn rather quickly it's typically best to expect the unexpected.
Central graduate Daryl Maday joined his third team in three weeks in being sent to San Jose of the Single-A California League on Wednesday. The right-hander made his San Jose debut the following night and notched the win as the host Giants defeated Stockton, 5-2, in front of 3,219 fans at Municipal Stadium.
Maday pitched six strong innings in allowing five hits and one run (earned) with no walks and eight strikeouts.
The right-hander overcame a rocky start - allowing a leadoff double, a single and a RBI groudout to the first three batters - before tossing five scoreless innings and retiring 16 of the final 18 hitters he faced. Maday left the game in the sixth inning with the Giants holding a 4-1 lead.
Selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 30th round of the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft, Maday was named a South Atlantic League All-Star with Augusta (Ga.) and led the minor leagues with a 1.50 ERA when he was promoted to Connecticut of the Double-A Eastern League on July 28. The 6-2, 220-pounder made three start starts with the Defenders and went 1-1 with a 8.35 ERA before being sent to San Jose.
The South Atlantic League is considered a lower level of Single-A, while the California League is more advanced. Maday struggled somewhat in his short stint at the Double-A level, where some players make a direct leap to the big leagues.
Maday was part of a playoff push with Connecticut and will provide a lift to the San Jose rotation in time for the California League playoffs beginning on the first week of September. San Jose,which currently holds a 3½-game lead in the North Division, has already secured a postseason berth in winning the first-half division title.
Maday is currently turning in one of the finest minor league seasons in county history. The former University of Arkansas hurler is 11-5 with a 2.51 ERA at three separate levels. In 26 games (17 starts), Maday has allowed 110 hits in 129 innings with 31 walks and 111 strikeouts.
San Jose already features one of the game's top pitching prospects in 19-year-old Tim Alderson (11-4, 2.99) and could be joined shortly by recent first-round draft pick Buster Posey.
Posey became only the second catcher to win the Golden Spikes Award as the nation's top amateur. The former Florida State standout received a club-record $6.2 Million signing bonus on Friday.
Playoff bound
Former Carthage standout Dan Grybash will attempt to capture his third independent league title in four years with the Fort Worth (Tex.) Cats of the American Association.
Grybash made his 17th start of the season as Fort Worth hosted El Paso Saturday night. The right-hander entered the game 6-5 with a 3.67 ERA.
Forth Worth (25-16) already secured a playoff spot in winning the first-half championship in the South Division. The Cats open the postseason on Aug. 25 in hosting the opener of the South Division Series.
Grybash was originally selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 34th round of the 2003 Draft after earning All-American honors with Carthage.
Roehl's streak ends
In his sixth professional season, Shoreland Lutheran graduate Scott Roehl is on the verge of closing out his finest year as a member of Akron (Ohio) of the Double-A Eastern League.
Roehl didn't allow a run in nine straight outings - covering a span of 6 innings - before finally giving up a pair of runs in a 6-0 loss against visiting New Britain on Friday.
The right-hander made his 36th appearance and is 1-2 with a 2.76 ERA. In 45 innings, Roehl has given up 37 hits with 17 walks and 48 strikeouts.
